Mechanical lymphatic drainage is a type of treatment aimed at stimulating the circulation of lymph (lymph), which is responsible for removing unnecessary metabolic products and toxins from tissues. This reduces lymphatic deposits and swelling in the extremities. In addition to the above effects, this treatment also improves blood circulation, which directly affects the state of tissue nutrition. Stimulation of the lymphatic system has a positive effect on the immune system.
Indications for mechanical lymphatic drainage are:
- chronic lymphedema of the upper and lower limbs
- condition after mastectomy
- venous insufficiency
- ischaemic disease of the lower limbs
- degenerative disease with accumulation of exudate
- obesity
Mechanical lymphatic drainage is also used in wellness, e.g. muscle regeneration after exercise, and in the cosmetology sector, e.g. cellulite reduction.
Contraindications to the procedure are:
- thrombophlebitis
- heart or kidney failure
- tumours
- atherosclerosis
- skin diseases in the treatment area
- hypertension
