SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) is one of the methods of treating spasticity by cutting a selected part of the sensory fibers running in the dorsal roots of the spinal nerves. Reducing the number of sensory impulses reaching the spinal cord also reduces the amount of reflexively generated motor impulses going to the muscles, thus reducing spasticity.
A proper rehabilitation after the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy procedure is a very important element influencing the effect of the procedure. The new biomechanics of tissues (ranges of mobility, change of muscle tone) requires the use of intensive and functional therapy aimed at adapting a child to a new situation and learning new skills. In particular, during the therapy after the SDR procedure, we work on improving locomotion (movement), independent change of positions (sitting down, standing up), muscular strength, as well as balance and coordination.
